1. Bartok - 78-79 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AR. No speed garage here, because Bartok is a classical music bar. Now that is original.
2. The Big Chill House - 257-259 Pentonville Road King's Cross N1 9NL. From the group that brought you the Cantaloupe and Big Chill Bar comes their latest incarnation. Expect more good stuff, music, drink, food, staff. 020 7427 2540.

4. The Medicine Bar - 181 Upper Street Islington N1 1RQ. As cool dj cars go this was a bit of a trailblazer a few years ago. Still in good shape now. 020 7704 9536

6. The Salmon and Compass - 58 Penton Street N1 9PZ. Eclectic music, young crowd, dance floor space only. No salsa classes on Monday either. 020 7837 3891.
7. Keston Lodge- 131 Upper Street Islington N1 2QP. Newcomer to the scene. They say "Djs generally not playing house music here". Interesting. They sell food too. 0207 354 9535.
8. Kinky Mambo - 144-5 Upper Street Islington N1 1QY. Cocktail bar swankiness for the salubrious Islingtonites this place is dead classy. 020 7704 6868.
9. The Chapel Bar - 29a Penton Street N 9PX. Temperance movement pulpit is now a dj booth. Good nights and some savage Sundays in this small venue. 020 7833 4090.
10. Anam - 3 Chapel Market Islington N1 9EZ. A new cocktail bar with Irish beginings...sounds good. Well thought of too, which is nice. Worth a visit. 020 7278 1001.
